Birthday: 18 September, 1950
Bio: I'm a South Dakota farm girl who grew up in the Hidewood Valley, attended a one-room country school and graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1968. Today I'm a retired U.S. Navy captain and the author of two published memoirs. "Navy Greenshirt: A Leader Made, Not Born" is the memoir of my military career, and "A Farm In the Hidewood: My South Dakota Home" is my childhood memoir.
Four years at Augustana College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, gave me a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education, English and Spanish. The mandated closure of rural schools ended my teaching dream, and I enlisted in the Navy in 1972.
I earned a commission through Officer Candidate School, became an aeronautical maintenance duty officer, and in 1997 was promoted to captain. I graduated from the Naval War College and earned two master's degrees from Embry Riddle Aeronautical University--a Master of Aeronautical Science and a Master of Business Administration In Aviation.
After commanding Defense Contract Management Agency Van Nuys in Los Angeles, I transferred to the Office of the Naval Inspector General in Washington DC, where I retired. My two daughters and I live in Maryland.
Interests:
I've been a runner for 21 years and have completed more than a dozen marathons and ultramarathons.
My hobbies include country-western music, dancing and reading.
I'm currently writing the authorized biography of country music singer Faron Young.
